Uganda’s Charity Cherop has won bronze in the women’s 3,000 metres at the World Athletics U20 Championships, clocking 8:45.59 in a closely contested final.
Cherop finished behind Ethiopia’s Yordanos Tsigab, who won gold in a personal best of 8:43.65, while Shito Gumi took silver in 8:45.06.
The Ugandan stayed within striking distance of the leaders throughout the race but was edged into third as Tsigab and Gumi battled for the top two positions.
Cherop’s bronze adds to Uganda’s medal tally at the championships and further underlines her growing reputation as one of the country’s promising young distance runners.
Her performance also adds another international podium finish to a season in which she has continued to make progress across the middle- and long-distance events.
The 3,000m result was decided by less than two seconds, with Cherop finishing just 1.94 seconds behind the winner.
Cherop’s emergence provides another boost to Uganda’s long tradition of producing elite distance runners, with the country continuing to invest in developing young athletes capable of competing on the international stage.
