Ugandan public health expert Dr David Musoke has officially taken office as President of the International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH), marking a significant milestone for Uganda on the global environmental health stage.
Dr Musoke assumed the presidency during the 18th IFEH World Congress held in Dubrovnik, succeeding Dr Bruno Cvetkovic at the close of the international gathering.
An Associate Professor at the Makerere University School of Public Health and a member of the Environmental Health Workers Association of Uganda (EHWAU), Dr Musoke brings extensive experience in disease control, community health systems, and environmental health research. His presidency will run from 2026 to 2028, following his earlier election as President-Elect in 2024.
The International Federation of Environmental Health is a global body that brings together professionals, researchers, and policymakers to advance environmental and public health standards worldwide. The 2026 Congress in Dubrovnik also marked the federation’s 40th anniversary and focused on building resilient environments and healthy communities.
In a further boost for Uganda’s international profile, the country successfully secured the bid to host the 19th IFEH World Congress in Kampala in 2028. The event is expected to be organised in partnership with EHWAU, the Ministry of Health, and Makerere University School of Public Health.
Dr Musoke’s appointment is widely seen as recognition of Uganda’s growing contribution to global health research and environmental health leadership. He has previously been acknowledged for his academic impact, including recognition at Makerere University’s Research Excellence Awards.
His leadership is expected to strengthen Africa’s voice in global environmental health discussions and position Uganda as a key hub for dialogue on sustainable health systems and environmental resilience.
