Mourine Muwonge, the Programs Director for Dwelling Places a Christian NGO that rescues, rehabilitates and resettles children from the streets has appealed to parents to pay attention to what their children watch on internet to avoid the increased children violence through internet.

Muwonge made the call during the inter-schools Music, Dance and Drama (MDD) competitions that were held at Mother Care Preparatoty School in Bunamwaya.

The competitions involved Mother Care Preparatory School, Rubiri Primary School, Nankulabye Junior School and Mengo Primary school. Pupils competed in several MDD activities relating to the subject of ending child trafficking.

A number of children have recently been trafficked through the use of internet and many have been exposed to ill behaviors that affect the innocence of the child.

“Internet has become so cheap, children have access to phones and internet cafés yet there are no regulations against that. This has left children exposed to pornography and other ill behaviors,” Muwonge expressed worry.

“The internet takes away the innocence of children who end up being exposed and involved in acts that they are not supposed to,” she added.

Muwonge noted that through such competitions and campaigns, they aim at equipping children with relevant knowledge so that they can best advocate for their rights.

“We realize that the children’s rights are being violated by so many. As part of the campaign to advocate for the rights of children, we have decided to empower them to be able to advocate for their rights themselves.”

“We feel if children are empowered with education, they can bargain for their rights and lobby for a service”.

She added that as children rehearse the poems and drama, they are in the memorizing the different ways through which they are being abused as well as ways through which they can handle such abuse.
