Nkumba University’s women’s football team, the Beach Girls, have won the women’s football title at the 12th All-Africa University Games in Cairo, Egypt, after defeating Guinea-Bissau’s Université Général Lansana Conté de Sonfonia 3-1 in the final.
The Ugandan side completed an unbeaten campaign to claim the continental university football title, according to reports from the tournament.
Midfielder Shafiga Tamisi scored twice, while Cecilia Apiding added Nkumba’s third goal in the final. The Guinean side scored once, but Nkumba held on to secure the championship.
The victory came a day after the Beach Girls reached the final with a commanding 5-0 semi-final win over Nigeria’s Nnamdi Azikiwe University.
Kamiyati Naigaga scored twice in the semi-final, while Catherine Wujja, Shafigah Tamisi and Jasmine Nalukwago each scored once.
Nkumba had also made a strong start to the tournament, defeating German University in Cairo 10-1 in their opening match. The team went on to maintain its unbeaten run through the competition.
The Beach Girls qualified for the continental tournament after winning Uganda’s 2026 International Women’s Day Inter-University Football Championship. Nkumba had subsequently been selected to represent Uganda at the All-Africa University Games in Cairo.
The 2026 Games brought together universities from across Africa in Cairo from September 8 to 16. The competition, organised under the Federation of African University Sports (FASU), featured thousands of student-athletes across multiple sporting disciplines. The American University in Cairo said about 2,000 athletes from 80 universities and 17 African countries participated in the Games.
The Ugandan Embassy in Cairo also said the Ugandan community in Egypt turned out to support Nkumba during its campaign, with the embassy participating in efforts to encourage Ugandan teams competing at the Games.
Nkumba’s victory adds another continental achievement to Uganda’s university sports record and gives the university its first women’s football title at the All-Africa University Games.
