Kampala, Uganda | The Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Haruna Kasolo Kyeyune, today met the families of three Ugandan nationals who were killed in xenophobic attacks in South Africa and handed over a condolence contribution of UGX 10 million to each family on behalf of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
During the meeting, Hon. Kasolo conveyed the President’s and the Government of Uganda’s heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, assuring them of the nation’s solidarity and support during their time of loss.
The Minister noted that the Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in coordination with relevant agencies, had facilitated the repatriation of the deceased to Uganda to ensure they received dignified burials. He added that efforts are ongoing to assist other Ugandan nationals who wish to return home from the affected areas in South Africa.
Hon. Kasolo further reiterated the Government’s commitment to supporting returnees through various socio-economic empowerment initiatives, including the Parish Development Model (PDM). He said the programme, established under the leadership of President Museveni, is intended to help Ugandans build sustainable livelihoods and improve household incomes.
The bereaved families expressed gratitude to President Museveni and the Government of Uganda for the assistance provided throughout the ordeal. They commended the Government for facilitating the return of their loved ones, extending financial support, and maintaining close communication with the families during the process.
Ambassador Johnny Muhindo, Head of the Diaspora Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also briefed the families on the Ministry’s continued engagement with Ugandans living abroad and ongoing efforts to strengthen the protection, welfare, and support mechanisms available to citizens working and residing overseas.
