Amus College School has won the 2026 CAF African Schools Football Championship CECAFA boys’ title, while its girls’ team secured bronze in Kigali, Rwanda.
The Bukedea-based school defeated hosts Rwanda 1-0 in the boys’ final at Kigali Pele Stadium on Saturday, September 5, securing Uganda’s place at the continental finals.
The victory also saw Uganda retain the regional boys’ title.
Amus reached the tournament after winning both the boys’ and girls’ national CAF Schools Championship titles at the USSSA National Championships in Gulu in July, becoming the first school to claim both titles in the same edition.
The boys opened their regional campaign with a 1-0 win over South Sudan and a 3-0 victory against Burundi before drawing 0-0 with Somalia.
They defeated Tanzania 3-1 in the semi-final before overcoming Rwanda in the final to complete an unbeaten campaign.
Mawanda leads individual awards
Amus also dominated the boys’ individual awards.
Vincent Kizza Mawanda was named Player of the Tournament, Kennedy Okwi took the Top Scorer award, while Mukasa Stuart Junior was named Best Goalkeeper.
The awards capped a strong tournament for the Ugandan champions.
Girls settle for bronze
The Amus girls completed the school’s double podium finish by beating Rwanda 2-0 in the third-place playoff.
They had won all three group matches, defeating Burundi 3-0, Rwanda 1-0 and South Sudan 2-0, before losing 2-0 to Tanzania in the semi-final.
Faith Akol opened the scoring in the bronze-medal match before Hellen Namulondo added the second to secure third place.
Tanzania won the girls’ title after defeating Kenya 3-0 in the final.
Amus takes home $150,000
The school’s success also comes with US$150,000 in prize money.
The boys’ title earned Amus US$100,000, while the girls’ bronze brought in another US$50,000. The prize money, supported by the Motsepe Foundation, is intended to support school development, including classrooms, sports facilities and clean-water infrastructure.
The double success marks another milestone for Amus, which previously finished third in the girls’ competition in 2022.
From national champions in Gulu to regional winners in Kigali, the Bukedea school has now established itself as one of Uganda’s leading forces in school football.
The boys will represent the CECAFA region at the CAF African Schools Football Championship continental finals, giving Amus another opportunity to take Ugandan school football onto the continental stage.
