Learners in Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) schools have been called to embrace science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects and strive for academic excellence to improve their future career prospects.
Shaherose Jamal, the director of Jubilee Life and Health Insurance, said Uganda needs educated and hardworking young people who can contribute to the country’s development. She delivered the message during a visit to East Kololo Primary School, where Jubilee Insurance officials donated scholastic materials to candidates preparing for the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE).
The company also supported candidates at Shimoni Demonstration School as part of its growing partnership with KCCA. Jamal urged the candidates to take their education seriously, explaining that academic performance plays an important role in determining future employment opportunities.
She also encouraged them to set ambitious career goals and develop the discipline needed to achieve them. “Our staff went through school like you. But to get to a good standard and apply for a job in a company like Jubilee, your education and results are very important,” she said.
“I would like to see some of you working with us. Aspire to take on STEM subjects because they are important in life,” she said.
Jubilee Insurance Uganda chief executive officer Eugine Mutekhele also encouraged the learners to approach their examinations with confidence.
“We know that you have worked hard and practised. The teachers have invested a lot in you, and we have trust that you will do well,” Mutekhele said. He told the candidates that their education would benefit not only themselves and their families but also the country.
“As Jubilee Insurance, we also have a responsibility to the community where we get to inspire candidates like you to focus on your education,” he said. 134 candidates at the two schools prepared to sit their PLE examinations. Of these, 31 are registered at East Kololo Primary School, while Shimoni Demonstration School has 103 candidates.
The donation forms part of Jubilee Insurance’s planned partnership with KCCA, which will also include healthcare and environmental conservation activities targeting schoolchildren. The company is planning several other activities to support children beyond the classroom. Among these are environmental conservation programmes designed to teach learners proper waste disposal and the importance of maintaining clean surroundings.
