Students have been urged to adopt a proactive approach to their careers, embracing curiosity and resilience as essential tools for success. This message was conveyed during The Career Cupid Clinic, which drew 490 participants to Kyambogo University’s CTF Auditorium.

The event, themed “Stop Searching, Start Matching,” aimed to equip students with the skills and mindset necessary to secure fulfilling employment in a competitive job market. Speakers emphasized that a degree is merely the starting point, and that internships and practical experience are crucial for career advancement.

Joseph Collins Ssemmanda, representing the Dean of Students, stressed the importance of professional accountability, while keynote speaker Eng Joseph Kigozi highlighted the need for excellence in a competitive environment. “The decision to pursue excellence is the primary differentiator,” he said.

The Gen-Kazi (Generation Kazi) initiative, a flagship program of BrighterMonday, was also showcased. This initiative seeks to redefine the way youth approach their careers, shifting from a focus on searching for jobs to creating opportunities.

Jeffery Luboga, Head of Workforce Development at BrighterMonday Uganda, emphasized the importance of being proactive in the job market. “Opportunities favor the brave,” he said, urging students to take ownership of their career development.

Guest speaker Solomon King warned attendees that artificial intelligence is an “accelerant” that demands excellence and adaptability. He noted that nearly 65% of Ugandan employers cite a lack of soft skills as a major hiring constraint, highlighting the need for students to develop these skills.

The event concluded with a call to action, encouraging students to take control of their career trajectories and strive for excellence in their chosen fields.
