Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) shot and killed two Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels in the Kibale forest in Western Uganda.
In the same encounter, the commander of the rebels only identified as Kamusi was reportedly injured.
“A top commander of the Allied Democratic Forces known as Kamusi has been injured and two of his close bodyguards were put of action by security forces in Kibale Forest. The hunt to eliminate the remaining terrorists and their agents within the country continues,” UPDF said in a statement on X.
On 5th December 2023, Kamusi and his group attacked an elderly lady, Biira Betty in Kanyatete village in Kasese District and hacked her to death, injuring her attendant, a 14-year-old boy named Masereka Harrison.
Upon receiving the information about the unfortunate incident, the UPDF through technical intelligence and in collaboration with the deceased’s relatives managed to track Kamusi and his group in Kibale forest.
Two of his close bodyguards were killed and the following SMG rifles were recovered: two guns, Number NY3231, Number 2900339 a total of 37 rounds of ammunition.

“This was the surviving group of Njovu (who was arrested earlier in November) which was attempting to cross into Kibale to establish bases.”
According to a statement by President Museveni, UPDF Marines wounded and captured Njovu on Lake Edward while Kamusi escaped.
“However, the main effort is to wipe out the ring-leaders in Congo – in the forests and the Trading Centres,” he said.
ADF suspects arrested
Meanwhile, the Joint Anti-terrorism Task Force on December 5, 2023, arrested Nyanzi Levi David Mwenze in Kiira Region and Kiira Central Division, Jinja City.
According to Police Spokesperson, SCP Fred Enanga, Mwenze was arrested around 4:45 am “after getting reports of his suspicious behaviour of taking pictures of Embassy restaurant and bar located along the Iganga road in Jinja Central Ward, in Jinja City”.
“The suspect who disguised as a mad person, was putting on very dirty clothes and in possession of bundles of cash in denominations of Ugx 50,000=, 20,000= and 10,000=,” Enanga told journalists in Kampala on Monday.
Mwenze was arrested, searched and found in possession of exhibits which included AK47 bullets, 4 sim cards, 8 Jinja City Street parking receipts of motor vehicles registration number UBK 620F, 3 other sim parks, school receipt of Victoria boarding primary school.

“The suspect admitted that he was an ADF rebel, on a surveillance mission. He was examined by a psychiatrist and found to be mentally stable and pretended to be mad. Efforts are in place to trace other members of their cell in Jinja City.”
In a separate development, the police in KMP North and Nansana division arrested Baron Muzigyei, a 40-year-old Congolese National on December 10, 2023, for being a rebel after he was heard communicating on the phone while mentioning rebel groups in the DRC.
“This was at around 2 am, from a local bar, in Ochieng zone, Nansana division,” said Enanga.
The suspect who hails from Beni in the Democratic Republic of Congo had no identification documents on him. He was handed over to Crime Intelligence for further interrogation.
“As you are all aware, the ADF is strongly weakened both in the DRC and in Uganda. There are existing cells where the ADF remnants are trying to establish operative cells that are mobile, autonomous and flexible, as they try to carry out attacks, on both vulnerable and soft targets, in the country,” Enanga noted.
He said the ongoing arrests and disruptive operations are aimed at thwarting their mobility and proliferation.
