The Ibanda district Woman Member of Parliament, Jovrine Kaliisa Kyomukama has asked local council leaders in the district to account to their electorate for the pledges made during last elections.

She said that this is the only way that the blame game and leaders in the district accusing each other of failure to deliver will be dealt with.

The legislator’s comments were in reaction to the concerns raised by locals in Kafunjo and Birongo in Ishongororo sub-county, who last week expressed dissatisfaction towards elected leaders whom they faulted for abandoning their villages after elections.

Locals said this on Thursday while constructing a temporary bridge connecting Birongo parish and Kiburara A in Ishongororo town council.

They castigated the leadership at the district for failing on their duty to deliver services to their respective areas.

“We are disappointed with our leaders who don’t come back so we can engage them. They have not worked on the roads, hospitals, schools and other projects. We have many challenges,” Bruno Biryomumaisho said.

Another resident called Geoffrey Naturinda told SoftPower News: “We the ordinary citizens are suffering. We are fixing bridges by ourselves, many of our children have fallen victims to this very bridge. It [bridge] is the only way for our children to get to school as well as connecting us to the next township”.

While meeting women groups in villages of Ronkonkoma, Kafunda, Rwengyiri, Kasharara and Kyeikucu in Kagongo division Ibanda Municipality on Friday, MP Kaliisa blamed  local council leaders from different villages, sub-counties, divisions and town councils whom she said have failed to fulfill their mandate.

“Every leader told you his/her name during campaigns and also promised what to do for you. So, let them deliver but stop attacking me claiming that I have failed to perform,” Kaliisa explained.

The legislator handed Shs 500,000 to each of the women groups to foster development and alleviate poverty in their families.
