Kampala — Airtel Money has announced a landmark partnership with the Virunga Gorilla Marathon, becoming the official and exclusive payment partner in a move aimed at accelerating Uganda’s transition to a cashless economy.

Under the partnership, Airtel Money Merchant Pay will be fully integrated into the marathon experience, with all kit purchases conducted digitally. Organisers say the initiative is designed to promote secure, convenient, and transparent transactions for runners, vendors, and surrounding communities.

The Virunga Gorilla Marathon, held annually in the scenic Virunga Mountains, has grown into a flagship sporting event that blends athletics with environmental conservation, tourism promotion, and community development.

Driving digital payments adoption

Speaking at the launch, Airtel Money Managing Director Japhet Aritho, who was represented by Hope Ekudu, the Head of Airtel Money Operations, said the partnership aligns with the company’s broader vision of digitising financial transactions.

“Today, we take another step in advancing our vision of a cashless economy, one that simplifies transactions and makes them more accessible through digital solutions,” Aritho said.

“At Airtel Money, we believe the future of financial transactions is digital, driven by simplicity, accessibility, and convenience. This partnership brings that vision to life on a trusted and impactful platform.”

He noted that beyond payments, the marathon plays a wider socio-economic role. “This marathon is something to be proud of. It is more than a race; it is a platform that brings people together, promotes tourism, and uplifts communities,” he added.

“At Airtel, we remain committed to supporting initiatives that not only celebrate Uganda’s heritage but also contribute to the well-being of communities and their people.”

Seamless payments for runners

As part of the arrangement, participants will purchase running kits exclusively through Airtel Money Merchant Pay. Runners can access the service by dialling 1859# or using the MyAirtel App.

Organisers say the shift to digital payments will improve efficiency and accountability while enhancing user experience.

The marathon is scheduled for May 30, 2026, and will feature two categories: a 112km Ultra Marathon and a 42km Full Marathon. Registration fees are set at UGX 70,000 for Ugandan participants and USD 30 for international runners.

Organisers welcome partnership

Team lead Kenneth Kamukama Rashid welcomed the collaboration, noting its potential to boost participation and streamline operations. “We thank Airtel Money for always being innovative and for creating solutions that enhance flexibility and convenience,” Kamukama said.

“We believe this partnership will significantly boost kit sales due to its ease of use. It also enables us to improve access to running kits and better track transactions.”

He highlighted the unique experience awaiting participants: “Our runners will experience an unforgettable challenge as they pass through rainforests, rolling hills, and ancient lava fields, while also engaging with the warmth and hospitality of local communities.”

Expanding financial inclusion

Aritho reiterated Airtel Money’s commitment to driving financial inclusion across Uganda through such partnerships.

“As Airtel Money, we will continue to enable seamless payments, expand access, and drive financial inclusion across Uganda,” he said. “Together, we are not just powering payments—we are powering progress, inclusion, and a more connected Uganda.”
