Uganda’s coffee industry has reached a major turning point. It has outpaced Ethiopia to become Africa’s leading coffee exporter.
In May 2025 alone, Uganda exported a record-breaking 47,606.7 tonnes of coffee—equivalent to 793,445 60 kg bags—a dramatic 43.59% increase compared to May 2024. This performance pushed the country’s cumulative annual export value to over USD 2 billion, marking a historic milestone for the nation’s agricultural sector.
According to the latest figures, Uganda outstripped Ethiopia’s 43,481.02 tonnes in May, solidifying its place as the continent’s leading exporter. Over the past 12 months (June 2024–May 2025), Uganda shipped 7.43 million 60 kg bags, generating USD 2.09 billion, up from 6.08 million bags the previous year. Italy was the top destination, accounting for 39% of exports, with Europe taking in 67%, Africa 18%, and Asia 13%.

This exceptional growth is attributed to improved quality control measures, farmer training, and expanded access to high-grade inputs—efforts championed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF). These measures are positioning Ugandan coffee as a global favourite, recognised for its high quality and unique flavour profiles.
“Uganda reaffirms its ambitious commitment to transform its export trajectory—from US$50 billion to US$500 billion—through strategic value addition. Coffee will be one of the primary drivers to achieve this export target,” said Hon. Bwino Fred Kyakulaga, Minister of State for Agriculture.
“As highlighted in the May coffee report, Italy remains our primary consumer, while Switzerland stands as the epicentre of global coffee trade. Our delegation’s objectives are fully aligned with our national goals, and we are resolute in optimising every engagement to ensure Uganda reaps enduring benefits on the world stage.”

Uganda’s coffee success story will be showcased at the World of Coffee Geneva 2025, taking place from 26–28 June at Palexpo SA. The international speciality coffee trade show, considered Europe’s premier coffee event, will feature global competitions, workshops, and immersive experiences. Uganda’s presence includes a dedicated pavilion (booth 2371) with daily cupping sessions at 11:00 am and a special cupping event on 26 June at 2:30 pm in Cupping Room 2, alongside participation in expert panels.
“This week, as we unite in Switzerland, I am profoundly grateful for the collaborative spirit that has brought our team together,” said Ambassador Arthur Kafeero, Uganda’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva.
“Standing in Geneva, not merely as a geographic point, but as the pulsating heart of the green coffee trade—with over 50% of such commerce transacted here—underscores the timeliness and transformative nature of our mission. Geneva exemplifies our capacity to bridge communities, crafting sustainable ties that honour our shared vision of mutual growth and enduring international dialogue.”

Leading Uganda’s coffee delegation is Robert Byaruhanga, President of the Uganda Coffee Federation, who emphasised the sector’s evolving global footprint: “At this expo, our exporters embody the spirit of Ugandan coffee—each bean a testament to our rich heritage and our resolute pursuit of excellence. The World of Coffee conference and expo is more than an event; it is a celebration of meaningful partnerships and international camaraderie that fortifies our shared journey.
By harnessing cutting-edge marketing strategies and innovative branding, we are illuminating Uganda’s coffee on the world stage, transforming every interaction into a legacy of promise and progress.”
The convergence of record-breaking exports, innovation in quality enhancement, and proactive global engagement signals a bold new chapter for Uganda’s coffee industry. With steadfast support from government and stakeholders, Uganda is poised not only to sustain this growth but to lead Africa’s coffee trade into a vibrant and competitive future.
