Jinja — The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has commenced the final phase of preparations for the Uganda Aquaculture Census 2025, a nationwide data collection exercise aimed at generating accurate statistics on the country’s aquaculture sector.
In a statement released via their official X (formerly Twitter) account, UBOS announced the successful completion of a six-day training session for the Technical Team, who will serve as Trainers of Trainees (ToTs).
The session, held at Jinja Nile Resort Hotel from April 24 to April 30, was designed to equip the ToTs with the knowledge and tools necessary to guide the next phase of training for Enumerators.

“These trainers are now fully prepared to mentor and guide the Enumerators who will be the backbone of the data collection exercise,” the Bureau noted. “This is a critical step toward ensuring the credibility and reliability of the census.”
A total of 284 Enumerators are expected to be trained starting May 5, ahead of their deployment on May 12, 2025. The Enumerators will be responsible for collecting data from aquaculture establishments—fish farms and related facilities—across the country. The training will cover key areas such as data collection protocols, use of digital tools, ethical engagement with respondents, and safety procedures.
UBOS also underscored the importance of collaboration with local authorities. The Bureau is working closely with District Planners and District Fisheries Officers to ensure comprehensive coverage of all aquaculture establishments in the census.

“As we work to generate reliable and quality aquaculture statistics for informed planning, we call upon all stakeholders and the general public to support and cooperate with our data collectors,” UBOS urged in its public message.
The 2025 Aquaculture Census is expected to provide Uganda with its most detailed snapshot yet of fish farming activities, contributing to national development efforts under Vision 2040 and the Parish Development Model.
