Opinion: School Study Trips Are Not Deadly, Reckless Driving Is

The recent road tragedies involving school study tours have sparked public debate, with some voices calling for restrictions or outright bans on educational trips. While the grief and concern are understandable, we must be careful not to misdiagnose the problem. School study trips are not deadly; reckless driving, poor road discipline, and inadequate safety measures are.

For decades, educational excursions have played an important role in enriching classroom learning. They expose learners to real-life experiences, broaden their understanding of the world, and help them appreciate Uganda’s rich natural, cultural, and historical heritage. A child who visits a national park, a museum, a factory, a research institution, or a historical site often gains lessons that cannot be fully captured in textbooks.

Rather than banning study tours, government should strengthen and strictly enforce safety regulations governing school travel. Schools and transport providers must be held accountable for ensuring that vehicles are roadworthy, drivers are competent and adequately rested, speed limits are observed, and all necessary safety precautions are followed. Authorities should conduct thorough inspections before long-distance educational journeys and take firm action against operators who endanger the lives of learners.

At the same time, schools should reconsider the growing tendency to undertake excessively long journeys in search of learning opportunities. Uganda is blessed with diverse landscapes, ecosystems, industries, historical sites, and cultural attractions spread across every region. There is immense educational value within local communities and neighboring districts. Not every school needs to travel hundreds of kilometers to achieve meaningful learning outcomes.

A school in Eastern Uganda can learn extensively from the natural, cultural, and economic resources within its region. The same applies to schools in the North, West, and Central regions. Localized study tours reduce travel risks, lower costs and allow learners to better appreciate the environments in which they live. Uganda itself is a classroom waiting to be explored.

Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is supporting this cause by offering conservation education and awareness among young people. As part of this commitment, UWA has established conservation education centers to provide learners with opportunities to gain hands-on knowledge about wildlife, biodiversity, and environmental conservation.

The Uganda wildlife conservation education center and Mbale Wildlife Conservation Education Centre continue to receive students and visitors seeking to learn about Uganda’s natural heritage. These centres serve as important resources for schools in the central and eastern regions, respectively, to demonstrate how quality educational experiences can be brought closer to learners.

To further expand access to conservation education, UWA plans to establish additional regional education centres in Mbarara, Kyenjojo and Gulu. These centres will provide schools with convenient opportunities for environmental learning, reducing the need for long-distance travel while promoting conservation awareness among future generations.

As a nation, our focus should not be on eliminating educational opportunities for children but on making them safer and more accessible. The solution lies in responsible planning, strict enforcement of transport safety standards, and greater investment in regional learning facilities.

Educational trips remain valuable tools for learning and nation-building. We should preserve them while ensuring that every child returns home safely. The real enemy is not the study tour it is recklessness on our roads.
