Kampala Embraces the Art of ‘The Unhurried Sunday’

Something is refreshing about a Sunday that makes no demands of you. No strict itinerary, no rush to get somewhere and no pressure to make the most of every minute. Sometimes, all it takes is good food, familiar music and the company of friends to make a day worthwhile.

That was the spirit at Thrones Lounge on Sunday, as The Singleton’s Big Meeting returned for its September edition, giving Kampala another reason to slow down and enjoy the afternoon.

Held on the last Sunday of the month, The Big Meeting has increasingly become part of Kampala’s evolving daytime social culture, where the appeal lies as much in the experience as it does in the people one gets to share it with. As September drew to a close, guests gathered for an afternoon of food, music, cocktails and conversations, embracing a social occasion that did not require the late-night energy of a conventional party.

The music provided a natural rhythm to the afternoon, with Kamali, DJ Tutu, DJ Big E and Em That Guy taking turns behind the decks. Ursh Trey, Adele Kiele and Saint Trevor also featured on the entertainment line-up, adding to the atmosphere as the afternoon progressed. The selections offered a soundtrack for different moods, from easy-going conversations over brunch to moments when guests were drawn towards the dance floor.

Food was equally central to the experience. Chef Sir Aludah brought his culinary skills to the gathering, making the grill an important part of the afternoon. For many, food is often the starting point of a social occasion, and at The Big Meeting, it offered guests another reason to linger, share a meal and reconnect. The combination of food and music created an atmosphere in which the afternoon could unfold without a hurried transition from one activity to another.

The Singleton, meanwhile, remained at the heart of the gathering through its interactive whisky and cocktail experience. Guests had the opportunity to explore the brand in a relaxed setting, with the Do-It-Yourself cocktail concept encouraging participation and discovery. Guided by mixologists, the experience brought a creative element to the gathering, allowing guests to engage with single malt whisky beyond the conventional pour.

But perhaps the most significant part of The Big Meeting is what it represents in a city where leisure is increasingly being reimagined. For Kampala’s busy professionals, creatives and social circles, such gatherings offer a chance to reconnect outside the demands of work and everyday responsibilities. They are occasions to catch up with friends, meet new people and enjoy a few hours without having to plan much beyond showing up.

The growing popularity of daytime experiences also reflects a shift in the city’s social habits. Brunches and garden parties have become attractive alternatives to late-night outings, offering people the opportunity to enjoy entertainment while retaining the ease of a Sunday afternoon.
