The architects of unforgettable nights often work from the shadows, tucked away behind decks, far from the spotlight. Yet in an era where anyone can compile a playlist, Smirnoff continues to celebrate the true pioneers of nightlife: DJs who elevate the craft through skill, creativity, and precision. The latest standout is JX Deejay, fresh off his victory in the Real DJs Scratch Battle Season 3.
JX’s journey into turntablism began in 2024, inspired by the competition’s debut season. His early attempts, however, were far from victorious. “Season 2 was a completely new experience for me, and I didn’t perform as well as I had hoped,” he recalls. Still, the setbacks only fueled his determination. He pushed forward, reaching the finals of the Untamed Battle DJs the following year, only to fall short once again.
Heading into 2026, JX adopted what he calls “serious army practice,” sharpening his skills with relentless discipline. With the Season 3 finals set at Supremacy Lounge, his mindset was clear: losing was not an option. That preparation was tested dramatically when his mixer knob snapped off mid-performance. For most DJs, it would have been a disaster. For JX, it became an opportunity.
“When the knob broke, I was actually excited,” he says. “It gave me the chance to prove that complex scratch patterns typically done on the crossfader can also be executed on the upfader.” His ability to adapt under pressure ultimately defined his winning performance, bold, innovative, and technically masterful.
Organised in partnership with the DJ Association of Uganda, the Real DJs Scratch Battle has grown into a cultural melting pot, drawing talent from across the country. DJs from regions like Soroti and Lira brought fresh perspectives to Kampala’s scene, enriching the competition. “The Northern DJs introduced styles we don’t often see here in Central Uganda,” JX notes. “Watching talents like Tompoo opened my mind to new approaches in tone, crowd control, and advanced scratching.”
For JX, turntablism is more than entertainment; it is a disciplined art form. He draws a clear distinction between casual playlist curators and true DJs who dedicate themselves to mastering the craft. “Many people call themselves DJs but shy away from the process it takes to truly excel,” he says. “With platforms like this, the technical standard in Uganda is only going to rise.”
Despite the challenges of breaking into Kampala’s highly competitive nightlife scene, JX remains optimistic. Winning Season 3 and the UGX 5 million grand prize has given him both visibility and a foundation to build a sustainable career. “This opportunity allows me to make meaningful investments in my future,” he explains.
The track record of past winners reinforces the competition’s impact. Season 1 champion DJ Easy Samuel now features on NTV’s GXP show, while Season 2 winner DJ Sir Tim Dee has made a strong name for himself in Soroti. JX is determined to follow and exceed that trajectory.
Through initiatives like the Scratch Battle, Smirnoff continues to champion raw talent and technical excellence, reinforcing the idea that great nights are built on skill and creativity. JX’s advice to aspiring DJs is simple but powerful: “Set clear goals and make practice a daily habit.”
As Uganda’s DJs increasingly evolve into fully recognised artists, Smirnoff’s ongoing support is helping raise the bar. If anything, this is just the beginning; we are only scratching the surface of a new wave of entertainers redefining the nightlife experience.
