London — Uganda Airlines made aviation history over the weekend as its inaugural direct flight from Entebbe to London Gatwick Airport touched down, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s aviation, trade, and diplomatic sectors.
The airline proudly became the first carrier to operate the Airbus A330-800neo into London Gatwick, drawing enthusiastic responses from Ugandan and UK officials, business leaders, and the diaspora community.

The direct connection, with an 8-hour flight time, is the only non-stop route between the UK and Uganda, bringing new opportunities in travel, tourism, and commerce.
In a statement posted on social media, Uganda Airlines described May 18 as “a special day for Uganda’s travellers to London,” while Gatwick Airport welcomed the airline’s arrival, noting it increases the number of African destinations served from the airport to 16.

The new route was met with fanfare on both ends. At London Gatwick, Uganda’s High Commissioner Nimisha Madhvani and UK High Commissioner to Uganda Lisa Chesney warmly received the arriving flight, symbolically embracing to mark the success of a bilateral process years in the making.
In a tweet, Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the flight “a victory for diplomacy” and a “new frontier for bilateral trade, tourism and technical cooperation.”

Uganda Airlines’ interim office will be based at Uganda House on Trafalgar Square, further rooting the national carrier within London’s diplomatic and commercial circles.
Speaking before the flight’s departure in Entebbe, British High Commissioner Lisa Chesney emphasised the significance of the direct route in unlocking trade potential, especially for Ugandan coffee exports. She noted that while the UK consumes over 98 million cups of coffee daily, Uganda holds just 1% of that market.

She urged the Ugandan government to leverage the new route to scale up export volumes, branding the flight a “vital trade opportunity.”
@UKinUganda, the official handle of the UK mission in Kampala, celebrated the moment: “Historic moment! @UG_Airlines inaugural flight to the 🇬🇧 takes off! Huge congrats to the passengers on board, representing 🇺🇬’s business, cultural & diplomatic communities.”

Business leaders, including Ron Kawamara, were among the inaugural passengers, highlighting the commercial value of the route in reducing travel time, cutting costs, and facilitating faster business deals between Uganda and the UK.
Meanwhile, special acknowledgements were extended to the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), the UK Civil Aviation Authority, and former High Commissioner Amb. Joyce Kikafunda, Amb. Julius Moto and Deputy High Commissioner John Mugerwa, whose efforts laid the groundwork for the bilateral aviation agreement.

British-Ugandan peer Lord Dolar Popat was also credited for his persistent advocacy to see the Entebbe–London route realised.
The inaugural flight is more than just an aviation achievement; it is a symbol of renewed bilateral energy, with expectations of enhanced tourism, stronger business ties, and greater diaspora engagement. For Ugandans living in the UK, London is now just hours away from home, directly, conveniently, and proudly under the national flag.
As one passenger put it upon arrival at Gatwick: “It’s not just a flight; it’s a bridge between two worlds.”
