The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) President, Hon. Moses Magogo, and Chief Executive Officer, Edgar Watson, have been appointed to prestigious committees of the world football governing body, FIFA.

Hon. Magogo joins the Football Technology, Innovation, and Digital Transformation Committee. At the same time, Mr Watson takes up a position on the Technical Development Committee — a recognition of their leadership and contribution to the growth of football in Uganda and beyond.

In a congratulatory message, FUFA hailed the appointments as a testament to Uganda’s growing influence in global football governance. “Congratulations to the FUFA President Hon. Moses Magogo and CEO Edgar Watson, who have been appointed to the Football Technology, Innovation and Digital Transformation and the Technical Development Committees of FIFA respectively,” the federation posted.

The FIFA Football Technology and Innovation Committee is responsible for exploring and implementing emerging technologies that enhance the game — from goal-line technology and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system to innovations in playing surfaces and digital engagement.

The committee’s work aligns with Goal 3 of FIFA’s Strategic Objectives for the Global Game 2023–2027, which focuses on driving fan engagement, investing in digital technology, and integrating artificial intelligence for future generations of football fans and professionals.

According to FIFA, innovation is now at the heart of the sport’s evolution. “Technology provides many new opportunities and FIFA recognises that it is an integral part of modern society,” the organisation said in a statement. “Our organisation is committed to leveraging it as a driver for progress at various levels.”

Recent innovations include trials of body cameras for referees, set to debut at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025. The initiative aims to provide a first-person perspective of refereeing decisions and enhance transparency for fans and officials alike. Pierluigi Collina, Chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee, noted that the technology offers viewers a “new experience, showing images from an angle of vision never offered before.”

Meanwhile, the FIFA Technical Development Committee, where Mr Watson will serve, focuses on advancing coaching standards, youth development, and football education globally. The committee plays a crucial role in aligning technical growth strategies with FIFA’s mission of developing the game in all its forms.

The appointments of Hon. Magogo and Mr Watson not only spotlight Uganda’s rising prominence on the global football stage but also open new avenues for knowledge exchange and collaboration in football innovation and development.

FUFA expressed optimism that their inclusion in FIFA’s leadership structures will further strengthen Uganda’s football ecosystem and inspire continued growth across the continent.
