Misunderstandings seem to entangle the circumstances around the death of ex Minister Hajj Akbar Adoko Nekyon as the family came out to refute recent claims made by so called family members who cited possible murder in Nekyon’s death.
Nyekon died last week on Friday May 4 and initial media reports claimed he passed on at Nsambya Hospital where he was admitted for unspecified health complications.
Six days later, the so called family through their lawyers Makmot Kibwanga and Company Advocates said that the former Minister could have been killed from Sheraton Kampala hotel.
In a letter dated May 8 titled ‘Reporting a potential homicide in the death of late Hon Hajj Akbar Adoko Nekyon’ to the Director of Criminal Investigations Department, the lawyers stated that the former Minister died “under mysterious circumstances”.
They suspected that he was killed by close relatives of prominent politicians with whom he had financial and property issues. Accordingly, they asked that Nekyon’s death be investigated.
But yesterday, the family including UPC President, Jimmy Akena who is Nekyon’s nephew distanced the claims raised by Makmot Kibwanga and Company Advocates.
“The family disassociates itself from the letter (to CID) and its contents and wish to inform the general public that none of the family members instructed Makmot, Kibwanga and Company Advocates to file a complaint to Uganda Police to investigate any possible homage in the death of Hajj Nekyon,” a press statement by the family reads in part.
It was issued by Engema Maitum, an uncle to the late Nekyon.
They say Nekyon had been indisposed for sometime and that he had earlier been admitted at Nsambya hospital. This was due to a stroke he suffered on March 18, they say. The statement adds that Nekyon died from his home in Nsambya and not in any hotel as alleged.
“The family is not involved in any squabbles for property of Hajj Nekyon and the contents of the letter attributed to the family to say the least, smacks of malice, ill will and derision. It is regrettable and extremely unfortunate,” the statement adds.
Jimmy Akena in an interview with SoftPower News equally dispelled the allegations that his uncle died at a hotel.
“The late Nekyon suffered a stroke in the village, he was then taken for treatment in Apac before he was transfered to Nsambya hospital. We (family members) received him,” Akena said.
“In Nsambya, he did not speak nor walk as he was in a critical condition. How would he then spend time at Sheraton in that condition?” Jimmy Akena wondered.
