MIDRAND, SOUTH AFRICA — Five Ugandan Members of Parliament have officially joined the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) after taking the oath of office during a ceremony held on Monday, July 27, 2026, at the PAP headquarters in Midrand, South Africa.

The legislators — Sarah Najjuma, Arinaitwe Rwakajara, Anthony Akol, David Kalwanga and Patience Nkunda — took the oath before the President of the Pan-African Parliament, H.E. Dr Fateh Boutbig, marking the beginning of their service in the continental legislative body.

The MPs are expected to represent Uganda’s interests while contributing to discussions on issues affecting Africa, including regional integration, economic development, peace and security, governance and social transformation.

The Pan-African Parliament is the legislative organ of the African Union (AU) established to provide a platform for African representatives to debate and promote policies aimed at strengthening unity and cooperation among member states.

Each AU member state is represented by a delegation of parliamentarians selected by their national legislatures, with representation reflecting the diversity of Africa’s political and social landscape.

The swearing-in of the Ugandan representatives comes as the continental parliament continues efforts to strengthen its role in advancing African integration and amplifying the voices of member states in AU decision-making processes.

The Ugandan delegation is expected to participate in PAP committee work and plenary sessions focusing on continental priorities, including implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), youth empowerment, infrastructure development and sustainable economic growth.

Uganda has historically played an active role in Pan-African institutions, with its representatives participating in debates aimed at addressing shared challenges and promoting cooperation among African countries.

The newly sworn-in MPs will serve alongside representatives from other African Union member states as the Pan-African Parliament continues its mandate of promoting dialogue, cooperation and a common African agenda.
