Britam Uganda and Airtel Mobile Commerce Uganda Limited, which operates Airtel Money Uganda, have launched a strategic partnership to expand access to regulated insurance, investment and other inclusive financial solutions through mobile-first channels.
The partnership establishes a long-term platform through which Britam and Airtel Money will combine financial services expertise, digital infrastructure, customer reach, and familiar payment behaviour to make protection and investment easier to discover, understand, pay for, and use.
At the centre of the collaboration is a shared ambition to help close Uganda’s protection and investment gaps. Many Ugandans actively earn, transact and support their families through mobile money, but remain exposed when accidents, illness, death or loss of income occur, and may have limited access to practical pathways for saving and investing. The partnership seeks to turn access into stronger financial resilience.
The partnership will be brought to market under the Insurance Ku Ssimu campaign platform, designed to reduce barriers such as distance, paperwork, limited operating hours and time away from work, while maintaining clear accountability, customer protection and the standards required of regulated financial services.
Britam brings capabilities across general insurance, life assurance and asset management. Airtel Money brings a nationwide digital payments platform, an extensive agent ecosystem and communication channels that reach customers across urban, peri-urban and rural communities. Together, the organisations will develop and distribute solutions based on demonstrated customer needs and subject to the relevant regulatory approvals.
Speaking at the launch, Allan Mafabi, Managing Director, Britam Uganda, said: “This is a strategic partnership built around impact, not simply a single product. We are bringing together insurance, life assurance and investment expertise with a channel that millions of Ugandans already use. Our ambition is to make financial protection and wealth-building more accessible, and to help households and businesses become better able to withstand shocks and plan for the future.”
Japhet Aritho, Chief Executive Officer, Airtel Mobile Commerce Uganda Limited, said: “Mobile money has already transformed how Ugandans participate in the economy. The next opportunity is to use that same reach and familiarity to help customers protect what they are building and access more pathways to long-term financial security. Through this partnership, we are moving beyond transactions and using our platform to support inclusion, resilience and meaningful customer outcomes.”
Aritho mentioned, “We are transitioning beyond simple transactions to foster inclusion, resilience, and positive customer outcomes.” Customer education will be a key aspect of the rollout, with Britam and Airtel Money engaging in media outreach, market activations, digital education, and live demonstrations. This approach aims to inform customers about the roles of insurance and investment, the services offered through the platform, and where to seek assistance.
The partnership will place customer education at the centre of rollout. Britam and Airtel Money will undertake media engagement, market activations, digital education and live demonstrations to help customers understand the role of insurance and investment, the services available through the platform and where to obtain support. The launch marks the beginning of a broader journey to bring regulated financial protection and investment opportunities closer to Ugandans, wherever they live and however they earn.
