Preparations were in full swing as Uganda Rugby awaited one of the biggest calls of their season.

Plans had been made, and training had been done ahead of their next major international tournament; the players were ready. And then it was all called off. Less than one week out from their quest with destiny, the Uganda Rugby Cranes Men’s 7s were forced to withdraw from the 2026 Africa Men’s Sevens Championship.

Stepping Stones Missed

The Africa Men’s Sevens Championship would have been an important stepping stone for Uganda as they look to continue climbing the ranks of African rugby. Africa is full of rugby talent. Few can match the pedigree of South Africa, Kenya, Zimbabwe, or Mauritius, the tournament hosts.

But some teams have continued to develop and improve year after year, chasing those at the top of the pecking order. Uganda Rugby is one of those teams.

Heartbreak for the Players and Fans

According to Bettingtop10 Uganda, authorities in Mauritius, in tandem with medical officials, announced a temporary ban on travellers from Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and South Sudan due to recent Ebola outbreaks in Uganda and the DRC. There is some comfort in knowing that this heartbreaking end to Uganda’s pre-season came from nowhere, and nowhere rugby-related. However, the new measures announced by the African Union Springboks posed availability issues for Uganda and left them with little choice but to withdraw from the tournament entirely.

No game-winning try against them. No match-winning performance to knock them out. Just hard luck. Not being able to play for your country because of circumstances out of your control is heartbreaking.

USRU Takes Action

Officials with the Uganda Rugby Union have been vocal in their displeasure with the tournament’s unforeseen direction. While no definitive solutions have been announced, the federation was quick to assure fans that it would do everything it could to prevent its players from being affected by the decision.

A True Loss for African Rugby

As disappointing as their absence is for Uganda Rugby and their fans, they are also a loss for the Africa Men’s Sevens Championship. Organisers build their tournaments around the best Africa has to offer, and every time a team can’t make it for whatever reason, it hurts the event’s overall quality.

The Rugby Cranes have been quietly building a strong foundation over the past few years. Aspiring to take the next step on Rugby Africa’s ladder, they’ve shown flashes of brilliance against Kenya and South Africa while picking up crucial victories against lower-tier nations. Uganda’s status as an unknown dark horse would have made them one of the more entertaining teams at the tournament.

USRU Looking Ahead

The Rugby Cranes still have international assignments to prepare for, and missing out on the Africa Sevens may just fuel their fire heading into those events. The Cranes were ready. They were ready to play in Mauritius and ready to represent Uganda on one of the premier stages in African rugby.
