The Commander-in-Chief of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Maj Gen Sam Kavuma the new Deputy Commander for the Land Forces.
He becomes the first to be appointed to this position.
This was confirmed by the UPDF Spokesperson Brig. Richard Karemire on Thursday evening.
Maj Gen Sam Kavuma has previously been serving as the Deputy Commander for the Air Force and has been replaced by Maj Gen Gervase Mugyenyi.
Having joined the National Resistance Army (NRA) in 1981, Kavuma, a distinguished and long time serving army officer has since held several command positions. These include Division Commander, Force Commander of the African Union (AU) Joint Task Force against LRA as well as Contingent Commander of UPDF in Somalia.
He is also currently Chairman of the UPDF Wazalendo Savings and Credit Cooperative Organization (SACCO) which officers and men of the army use to save their income.
Maj Gen Sam Kavuma attended and completed his Senior Command and Staff College as well as National Defence College Military Courses in Karen Nairobi.
He commanded a Division in Northern Uganda that fought against the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in Central African Republic and fought decisive battles against the Alshabab in Somalia.
At one point, he also once served as aide-de-camp (ADC) also known as personal assistant to President Museveni.
Kavuma will now deputise the Commander of Land Forces Maj Gen Peter Elwelu.
