Dealers in Agro-chemical and Inputs products have called for strict and stringent measures against counterfeits.
These say the only way to fight fake and altered products on the market is to pass strict laws and hefty fines for those convicted.
Dr Peter Kyabagu, the Managing Director of Bukoola Chemical Industries, said government needs to strengthen its surveillance, inspection and enforcement of the law against these criminals to fight the vice.
He noted that counterfeiting is understated in the country which has affected many genuine brands in Uganda.
He called for a multi sectoral approach towards fighting the vice, saying, “Farmers should be at the forefront of the fight.”
Kyabagu said this has caused a number of health concerns and losses in the agriculture chain.
He added that this has also led to economic sabotage since government is losing revenue through taxes, among others.
The Pesticide world market is worth approximately $45 billion compared to the African market that is reported to range between $1.5 to 2 billion, largely affecting farmers, exporters and the general public’s health.
Kyabagu said most national associations in Africa report about 15-20% of their markets as being affected by illegal pesticides while others suggest 40–80%.
Egypt, West Africa, Uganda and Tanzania have been reported to be the hot spots of a thriving illegal pesticide market.
Speaking at the same event, the Anti-Counterfeit Network (ACN), director for legal affairs, Fred Muwema, called upon players in the public and private sector to support the fight against counterfeits.
The calls were made at the launch Bukoola Chemical’s 50th Anniversary Roadmap celebrations at Protea Hotel, Kampala.
Bukoola chemical Industries will conduct a road map where they will meet different stakeholders until February 2023 when the official 50-year Anniversary celebration will be held.
