Inspector of Police (IP) Peruth Chemutai has won bronze in the 3000m steeplechase in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.
The Friday, August 5, 2022 bronze medal came on day 8 of the games.
The Ugandan athlete fell in the final minutes of the race, injured herself but then gathered herself to race to the end, finishing 3rd.
The Olympic champion raced in 9:23.24 in a race that saw Kenyan gold medallist Jackline Chepkoech take the lead to become the new Commonwealth Games 3,000m steeplechase champion.
Chepkoech sealed the deal in a Championship Record time of nine minutes and 15.68 seconds at the Alexander Stadium.
Britain’s Elizabeth Bird came second, winning a silver medal in 9:17.79.
Peruth Chemutai won the gold medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo in the women’s 3000 metres steeplechase race, becoming the first Ugandan woman ever to win an Olympic medal.
It was very unfortunate that Peruth Chemutai tripped and had a nasty fall over one of the barriers. In spite of this setback, she pushed on to finish in 3rd place, winning a Bronze Medal for #Uganda. Well done Chemutai!
