The Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka has called upon the general public to remain calm and allow government time to process necessary reforms in the bail process in the country.
The Attorney general made the call during an engagement between the Chief Whip office and the Uganda Parliamentary Press Association (UPPA) members.
During the engagement, the journalists demanded to know which stage has government reached in processing bail reforms following the recent reports that Cabinet had approved the reforms.
In response, Kiryowa said that the bail reforms have been discussed and are still being discussed before Cabinet.
“We shall at an appropriate time bring to Parliament an amendment for bail; allow us finish our thinking process but we shall bring it,” Kiryowa said.
Asked why discussions in Cabinet are still going on yet there are reports that Cabinet already approved the reforms, Kiryowa declined to respond.
On Friday 15, 2021 Cabinet endorsed criminal justice reforms, among them amendments to the 1995 Constitution and the Police Act, to deny suspects on capital offences bail or police bond.
According to cabinet, the amendments target suspects on murder, rape, robbery and treason charges, among others, as the main targets for the proposed reforms.
