The Minister for Public Service, Muruli Mukasa has revealed that government is set to increase salaries for all its workers.
This week, prosecutors resumed their strike over payment not long after judicial officers had also laid down tools.
According to Minister Mukasa, government has finalised a master plan that will see salaries for all its workers increased.
“The President directed and we are working around the clock to have it put into practice,” Muruli Mukasa told journalists at the Uganda Media Centre on Friday.
The Minister said that despite the delay, government is committed to enhancing the salaries for all its agencies and institutions.
State Minister for Finance David Bahati who also addressed the press said government understands the plight of its workers adding that soon their grievances would be addressed.
“We know the cost of living has increased and what the shilling cost ten years ago is now what is costing now.We need to enhance the salaries of our workers,” Bahati said.
However, salary increments will be effected in the coming 2018/19 financial year budget, the Minister for Public Service clarified.
“It is not that we have deliberately refused to increase salaries but we are restrained by funds,” he said.
He asked workers that won’t be patient to wait for the increment in the next financial year to resign their jobs.
“We don’t want to increase salaries for only six months and then stop,” he noted, adding that salary discrepancies between government workers would also be dealt with.
Health workers early this week threatened they would go on strike if government fails to increase their salaries.
