Former Presidential candidate and opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye has called out the Inspector General of Police Gen Kale Kayihura on his recent proposal to register all women in relationships as a way to curb crime, calling it a mockery of women. The FDC politician criticized government which he accused of failing to protect Ugandans.
Instead of addressing the rising spate of mysterious killings of women in Wakiso district with the urgency it deserves, government has taken the murders lightly, he said.
“Government has turned the matter into a joke. The IGP’s statements suggested that women are inviting it (murder) themselves,” Besigye said on Saturday.
He added that instead of working out means to bring to book the killers of women, police is focused on quelling those against the lifting of age limit.
According to Besigye, FDC is set to do their own independent investigations into the murder of women which he said might spread to other parts of the country.
“We want to find out who are behind these crimes,” Besigye added.
About 24 women have been brutally murdered in areas of Nansana and Entebbe in Wakiso district since May this year. Activists and rights groups have recently held protests condemning Police for looking on as lives are being lost.
In the wake of the political tension regarding the impending amendment of the Presidential age limit, the police became subject of public criticism for its hastened deployment in Kampala to quell protests yet women in Entebbe remain insecure.
