The Democratic Party (DP) President, Norbert Mao has revealed that after successfully popularizing the fight against the amendment of the constitutional Presidential age limit within Kampala, the party is now planning to extend the campaign to the countryside.

Addressing media at City house on Tuesday, Mao called on the Executive to ensure that any constitutional amendments are done through a consultative and transparent process rather than considering their majority in Parliament.

“It is not enough to say that you have the numbers. We vow to resist the tyranny of the majority in Parliament; in any case the majority of the people of Uganda according to the opinion polls, about 74 percent are opposed to the lifting of the age limit,” Mao said.

Mao observed that, “From now we are going to leave Kampala, we shall now take ‘K’ogikwatako’ campaign outside Kampala using the media and holding public rallies to popularise this topical issue.”

‘K’ogikwatako’ is a Luganda dare word loosely translated to mean that the ruling NRM should not dare attempt to scrap Article 102(b) of the constitution.

Mao observed that many people are still confused about what the campaign is all about adding that they will from now take on the duty to explain to the people all over Uganda.

The DP President revealed that they are monitoring the order paper of Parliament and will take any necessary actions in line with defending the constitution.

“Ugandans must put pressure on their MPs to reveal their stand, we are consulting among ourselves as political parties; we were very pleased to hear Gen Muntu announcing that he is suspending his campaigns for FDC presidency to devote more time to the ‘K’ogikwatako’ campaign,” Mao told the press.

He said that the party leadership will hold a meeting on Thursday with members of the Elders Platform led by Justice James Ogola who are currently meeting all key political leaders and political party leaders over the debate.
