Democratic Party (DP) parliamentary whip, Joseph Ssewungu has warned against the rampant motions that are being introduced by the different Members of Parliament.

So far a total of 7 notices have been duly received by the Speaker’s office seeking space on the order paper to introduce a motion seeking leave of the house to introduce a private member’s bill.

The intended bills to be introduce include a one to allow federal system of governance, the presidential transition bill, a bill to remove the need for academic qualifications for any elective position in the country among others.

Addressing the media at the party headquarters at City House, Ssewungu warned against the mushrooming motions that are being presented before the Speaker that some of them are just diversionary.

“Several members are rushing out to bring motions but some of them are not genuine, they are meant to divert us from the critical issue of fighting against removal of age limit from the constitution,” Ssewungu said.

He observed that some of the diversionary motions include one to be introduced by Mukono North MP, Muyanja Ssenyonga calling for federal system of government.

He said that despite being the chairperson of Buganda caucus, Ssenyonga has never consulted members on the matter he is moving, noting however that this needs to be handled after removing president Museveni.

Ssewungu has called upon the Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga to stand her ground and defend the people since this is the very time why she was unanimously voted in as a speaker of the August House.

“Museveni never wanted Kadaga to remain the Speaker but we stood our ground and maintained her in the seat for such a moment as this; we are interested in her to stand her feet,” Ssewungu said.

He called on the Speaker to maintain her earlier stand when she denied MP Robert Ssekitoleko who was seeking leave of the house to present a private member’s bill to lift the age limit of judges.

In her ruling, Kadaga called on the Executive to expeditiously introduce all amendments that are to be amended instead of allowing the constitution to be amended piecemeal.
