Makindye West Member of Parliament (MP), Allan Ssewanyana has been granted Police bond after spending two days in detention at Nagalama Police Station.
Ssewanyana was arrested on Monday morning after staging a demonstration at Kiruddu hospital while protesting the poor sanitation and sewerage system at the referral hospital.
The MP was arrested after moving to close down the hospital with chain demanding explanation why the hospital management has since failed to work on the sewage system despite Parliament approving over Shs3bn to work on the system.
He was charged with unlawful society under case number CRB 281/2019 of Katwe and will be required to appear before Kamapala South Regional CID officer at 10 am on February 22.
Ssewanyana’s release was secured by Buhwejju County MP, Francis Mwijukye and the Kawempe Lord Councillor, Muhammad Segirinya.
Upon release, Ssewanyana appreciated members of the public that have stood behind him, but vowed not to relent until the sewerage system at Kiruddu hospital is fixed.
“I have been charged with unlawful society, which is categorically a tramped-up and malicious charge, aimed at silencing me from demanding accountability for the released billions of tax payers’ money to fix the problem,” Ssewanyana said.
Ssewanyana argued that he is a member of Parliament who has all the rights to meet and interact with his constituents at anytime and to discuss issues that concern them.
“Like I earlier indicated, I lobbied for Shs 3.5 bn through the Parliamentary Committees of Health and Finance which was released to fix the sewerage system of the hospital which has not only become a problem to the neighborhood but also patients and workers therein. The facility is damn smelling,” Ssewanyana said.
He vowed not to give up on having the sewerage system of the hospital fixed with immediate effect.
“If our money meant to solve the problem was ‘eaten’ by those greedy and selfish officials, it is time for them to vomit it,” Ssewanyana noted.
