Water supply and sanitation company, National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has Sunday appealed to the public especially those in Kampala, to use water sparingly amid a possible water shortage in the city.

In a notice to its clients, NWSC says they have experienced a total power outage at Ggaba water treatment plant.

“This is affecting all water product process and supply in Kampala city. Please use water sparingly as the team from UMEME works to address this issue,” NWSC notice reads in part.

Power outages have not been the most cause of shortage of water supply in Kampala and other urban areas in Uganda.

The corporation has mostly been faced with challenges like rapid population growth, resulting in demand outstripping their capacity, which consequently cause shortages and illegal tapping of water.

Entirely owned by the government of Uganda, NWSC is mandated to operate and provide water and sewerage services in areas of Kampala, Jinja, Wakiso as well as other cities and towns of Uganda, on a sound commercial and viable basis.

On Sunday morning, Umeme reported a planned shutdown of power in the areas of Ggaba, Bunga, Kalungu, Kawuku, Soya, Kireka, Kamuli, Mbalwa, Kyaliwajjala, Kimbejja and Kirundambata.

“Power is off due to maintenance works and it will be restored around 5 pm today. All inconveniences caused are highly regretted,” Umeme posted in a tweet.
