Kasese District Woman Member of Parliament (MP), Winnie Kiiza has handed over office to the new Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Betty Aol Ochan.
Speaking at the handover, Kiiza described her reign in office as the most challenging as the country continues to wait for a peaceful transition of power.
The first ever female Leader of Opposition said that her term of office was so tough with matters that ranged from rampant insecurity in the country involving murders and kidnappings, the attack on Rwenzururu kingdom and the recent constitutional amendments.
Kiiza credited the good working relationship with fellow MPs as one of the factors that helped her overcome the challenges.
She urged her successor, Betty Ochan to pursue the projects she (Winnie) had been pushing, especially the revoking of the taxes levied on social media access and Mobile Money, as well as the ongoing appeal in the Supreme Court challenging the Age Limit ruling.
“As Winnie Kiiza, I have played my part and have left for others to also play their part. But this doesn’t mean that I have stopped taking part in the struggle to liberate the country, we shall continue to speak for Ugandans,” Kiiza said.
Kiiza said that she will now concentrate on representing her people of Kasese, her family as well as pursuing a case she lodged in the International Criminal Court (ICC) against the attack on Rwenzururu kingdom.
She lashed out at her party leadership in FDC for alleging that the opposition leadership in Parliament was changed because they were no longer making their party contributions.
Kiiza says that what the party did is something that was meant to happen because the law gives room for making these changes.
On her part, Ochan reiterated her earlier call for unity among opposition MPs.
She said that the first two weeks haven’t particularly been easy given the criticism she has faced from the public in relation to her appointment.
