Rwanda has suspended the importation and ordered the recall of 11 alcoholic beverages manufactured in Uganda, as part of a wider regulatory crackdown covering 52 alcohol products from six countries.

The Rwanda Food and Drugs Authority (Rwanda FDA) announced the suspension on August 5, citing public health concerns, and ordered importers, distributors and retailers to immediately stop selling the affected products.

The Ugandan brands on the recall list include several well-known products from Uganda Breweries Limited and other local distillers.

They are: Bond 7 Whisky — Uganda Breweries Limited, Campfire Gin — John Distillers (U) Ltd, Club 5 Gin — Glorrie Industries Limited, Tembo Liqueur — Glorrie Industries Limited, X5 Gin — John Distillers (U) Ltd, Jonney’s Gin — John Distillers (U) Ltd, X5 Liqueur — John Distillers (U) Ltd, Pan Master Whisky — John Distillers (U) Ltd, X5 Whisky — John Distillers (U) Ltd, Gilbeys’ Flavoured Gin — Uganda Breweries Limited and V&A Imp Cr Lqr — Uganda Breweries Limited.

The list includes some of Uganda’s widely recognised spirits, with Bond 7 and Gilbey’s among the products affected.

Rwanda’s action, however, is not limited to Uganda. The 52 products listed by the regulator also include alcoholic beverages manufactured in India, Tanzania, Kenya, Burundi and Poland.

Tanzania has the largest number of products on the list, including Konyagi, K-Vant, Diamond Rock Gin, Strong Dry Gin, Campfire Gin, Cuca Vodka and X5 Gin, while Kenyan products include Gilbey’s Gin, Kenya King, Safari Gin and Sweet Berry Vodka.

Products from India include Dyno Premium Whisky, Zoya Premium Gin, Bazooka Whisky, Magic Moments Chocolate Vodka and several other spirits. Burundi’s Karibu Gin and Poland’s Exo Vodka Energy Mix are also affected.

Immediate recall

Rwanda FDA has directed importers to begin a full recall of the affected products and ask distributors to return existing stocks.

Distributors and retailers have been instructed to stop selling the listed beverages immediately and return remaining stocks to importers.

Importers are also required to submit recall reports within three working days of the announcement.

The regulator has further ordered the removal of advertisements and promotional materials for the affected drinks and urged consumers to stop consuming them.

Rwanda FDA warned that additional products could be added to the list as regulatory enforcement continues.

The authority’s announcement does not, however, identify specific contaminants or explain in detail the particular safety concerns associated with each of the 52 products.

The move comes amid a broader tightening of alcohol regulation in Rwanda, with the country’s authorities increasingly focusing on the public-health impact of alcoholic beverages.

For Ugandan manufacturers and distributors, the suspension could affect access to the Rwandan market for the listed products while the recall is implemented.

Rwanda is an important regional market for Ugandan manufactured goods, making the inclusion of established brands such as Bond 7 and Gilbey’s notable for Uganda’s beverage industry.

Ugandan authorities and the affected manufacturers had not, by the time of publication, issued detailed responses explaining the basis of Rwanda’s decision.

The suspension is temporary, according to the Rwanda FDA, and applies specifically to the listed products pending further regulatory action.
