Two people have so far been arrested in connection with an armed robbery which resulted into the death of two people in Masaka district earlier this month.

On July 1 this year, there was a heist at Moses K Hardware Shop located in Masaka, in which a sum of Shs 400 million was stolen by robbers. According to Police, two people including a UPDF reserve officer identified as Moses Musinguzi and a casual labourer at the hardware shop identified as Shaffick Kigongo were shot and killed.

Now, Police Spokesperson, SSP Emilian Kayima has revealed that some of the people suspected to have been involved in the aggravated robbery have already been apprehended and they are in police custody.

Police also seized an assortment of items including a brand new car (Toyota Premio) suspected to have been bought using part of the stolen money.

According to Kayima, the breakthrough in the investigation was footage captured by the CCTV cameras at the shop in question. Cameras captured the events as they unfolded as well as the faces of the robbers which made it easy for Police to track them.

“Police started its investigation with clear leads because the CCTV footage helped us to identify the number of those who were involved including a boda boda cyclist, and their faces,” the Police Spokesperson, SSP Emilian Kayima told reporters on Monday.

One of the accomplices named Julius Tweheyo was arrested in Ntungamo, in South West of Uganda where he was found in a hotel. Tweheyo was in possession of Shs 40 million as well as a Toyota Premio vehicle which Police has since impounded.

“We highly suspect this vehicle was bought using proceeds of this crime. It is impounded. An assortment of other items have also been impounded because they are proceeds of a crime”..

Another suspect identified as Kankaka Gerevazio alias Kojja was also arrested in Busega near Kampala.

However, three suspects are still at large, including the prime suspect named Wakube James alias Imran, a resident of Busega. The other two who are on the run are a one Kayemba and another whose identity remains unknown.

Kayima urged members of the public who might know the whereabouts of Wakube and Kayemba to volunteer information to authorities so as to have them arrested.

Meanwhile, the gun used by the group during the robbery together with another gun that was stolen from the murdered security officer are yet to be recovered.

“We want to encourage business people as well as all those who can afford to use CCTV because it helps us to fight crime. Very soon, we shall update you on the national process of installing CCTV cameras because we are moving in that direction,” Kayima said.
