Residents of Kaayi in Kawanda, Wakiso district on Friday dedicated Juma prayers for the late Arua Municipality Member of Parliament (MP), Ibrahim Abiriga for his outstanding contribution to the growth of the area.
Abiriga was brutally murdered on his way back home in Kaayi village on the evening of June 8, 2018 by unknown assailants by gun fire.
The residents thus gathered yesterday to offer prayers in memory of his generosity, good and kind heart and renamed one of the roads that connects several villages as ‘Abiriga Memorial Road’.
These led by the former Councilor, Kawanda ward, Casmoto Mutebi planted a sign post on the road and called upon the authorities to have the road gazetted and worked upon.
They have appealed to President Museveni to take up the initiative and have the 10km road tamacked in memory of his NRM strongman.
“We have decided to rename the road after Abiriga in memory of his great work. He was a darling to most of us including the children who often stood on the road side singing and chanting his name,” Mutebi said.
Amiina Sijaare, the wife to Abiriga appreciated the residents of Kawanda for the love they have showed to the late even after his death.
“I am so grateful for the occasion which is evidence that the people of the area loved him not because he was an MP, but because of the love that he also showed them,” Sijaare said.
Sheikh Abas Jumba the Imam of Kaayi mosque noted that Abiriga was so supportive to the development of the Muslim community in the area as well as in the construction of the mosque.
“Many people lost Abiriga but we at the Mosque lost a great pillar. By the time of his death, we had talked to him to help us annex the land next to this mosque so that we expand given the increasing number of followers,” Jumba said.
He added that, “He had promised to talk to the President over it. We are still hoping that our call will reach the president so that we can as well construct a school which we shall name after the late Abiriga”.
