NRM SG Todwong Calls for Second Round of Village Barazas Ahead of LC Elections

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, has urged party leaders, supporters and voters to participate in the second round of nationwide Village Barazas as the party intensifies mobilisation ahead of the Local Council elections.

The Village Barazas are scheduled for Wednesday, July 22, 2026, and will serve as the final major mobilisation activity by the ruling party before voting for Village Women Council representatives on July 23 and LC I Chairpersons on July 28.

Todwong described the gatherings as an important platform for engaging communities, promoting party candidates and encouraging supporters to participate in the electoral process.

The first round of Village Barazas, held on July 10, was used by the party to fill vacant leadership positions and confirm official NRM flag bearers for the Village Women Council and LC I Chairperson elections.

This followed the nomination of candidates by the Independent Electoral Commission between July 15 and 19, after which candidates began campaigns at village level.

Todwong said the NRM’s grassroots structures give it an advantage in mobilising support across the country.

“There is no political party in Uganda with the structures that the NRM has. We have elected leaders in every village, and these structures have delivered victory in presidential, parliamentary and local government elections. We are confident they will mobilise support for our official flag bearers once again,” he said.

According to the Secretary General, the party has structures operating in approximately 72,000 villages across Uganda, with elected leaders responsible for grassroots mobilisation and promoting government programmes.

He said the Village Barazas provide an opportunity for party leaders to reach communities directly, explain the importance of the elections and encourage voters to support official party candidates.

“We have official flag bearers in virtually every village. I call upon all supporters to stand firmly behind them — united support for party candidates is the surest way to strengthen the NRM and consolidate our grassroots victories,” Todwong said.

He described LC I Chairpersons as key actors in Uganda’s local governance system, saying village leaders play an important role in mobilising communities, supporting government initiatives, maintaining peace and promoting development.

Todwong called on NRM structures at all levels to use the meetings to increase voter awareness, encourage participation and ensure supporters turn up to vote for the party’s endorsed candidates.

The mobilisation drive follows weeks of party activities across Uganda’s 18 sub-regions, where NRM leaders have called on members to remain united and support official flag bearers.

The party has expressed confidence that its nationwide structures, ongoing campaigns and grassroots mobilisation efforts will help it secure victories in the upcoming Village Women Council and LC I Chairperson elections.
