Former head of economic monitoring in the Internal Security Organization (ISO) and once Chief Editor of the ‘Uganda Confidential’ news magazine, Teddy Ssezi Cheeye has died after being hit by a motorcycle.
Cheeye is said to have been knocked by a boda boda in Nakawa on Thursday afternoon as he took a walk.
His death comes a year after he was released from his long jail term following a conviction in 2009 for embezzling Shs 120 million from the Global Fund. Justice John Bosco Katuusi who then headed the Anti-corruption court gave Cheeye a 10-year jail sentence and ordered him to refund Shs 10 million of the funds.
Although he was sentenced to 10 years, his jail term was later reduced to six years due to his good conduct.
In April 2017, Mr Cheeye admitted using the global fund money, but accused President Museveni of leading him into “sin”.
Until his death, the veteran journalist was regular political and economics analyst on leading television channels in Uganda.
