Jinja – Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) has expanded its fleet of eco-friendly vehicles with the addition of two electric buses from Kiira Motors Corporation (KMC).
The buses were officially handed over today by the Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Dr Monica Musenero, during Day Two of the ongoing National E-Mobility Expo at the Kiira Motors plant in Jinja.
The new e-buses, each with a 64-passenger capacity and a 500km range on a single charge, will complement UCAA’s existing electric fleet, bringing its total to three. The initiative aligns with the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) long-term goal of achieving net-zero aviation carbon emissions by 2059—a commitment to which Uganda subscribes.
“Uganda’s transition to clean mobility is gathering momentum, and we are proud to be part of this transformation,” said Dr Musenero, highlighting Uganda’s growing capacity in green technology manufacturing and adoption.
Makerere University remains the country’s leader in electric bus adoption, with four Kiira Motors buses already in service. The university is also set to officially receive two additional buses today at the Jinja plant as part of the Expo’s side events.
The National E-Mobility Expo 2025 has drawn industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators to showcase Uganda’s progress in building a sustainable, energy-efficient transport ecosystem. With over 5,000 electric motorcycles, 27 electric buses, more than 140 battery-swapping stations, and 30 DC fast chargers already operational nationwide, Uganda is positioning itself as a regional hub for green mobility solutions.
Free all-electric transport services have been provided for Expo attendees from key Jinja locations to the Kiira Vehicle Plant, underscoring the event’s theme of “Riding Green” towards a cleaner, smarter future.
