Hoima — Construction of the Hoima International Stadium, a state-of-the-art 20,000-seater facility, is well underway as Uganda ramps up preparations to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Kenya and Tanzania.

The stadium is also expected to play a key role in the upcoming CHAN 2025 tournament.

The Ministry of Works and Transport confirmed that the stadium, located in Hoima City — Uganda’s oil-rich hub — is being built to meet international standards, positioning it as a landmark sports infrastructure project for the country. Beyond football, the stadium complex will include a 2,000-seat indoor arena for multi-sports such as basketball, netball, and volleyball, a semi-Olympic-sized swimming pool, a dedicated training pitch, and multiple outdoor courts.

This stadium is not just a venue for sporting events—it is a cornerstone of Uganda’s preparations for AFCON 2027 and will be a catalyst for sports, tourism, and local development.

The facility is designed with modern amenities, including athlete housing, media facilities, and a parking area with a capacity for over 1,000 vehicles to support large-scale events.

Economic & Tourism Opportunities

Hoima City, designated as one of the host cities for AFCON 2027, is poised to benefit significantly from the stadium through an influx of sports tourism, hospitality growth, and wider economic opportunities tied to the tournament.

The project signals Uganda’s broader ambition to leverage international sports to drive infrastructure growth, tourism, and job creation. The Ministry reaffirmed that the stadium will be ready ahead of schedule to meet CAF and FIFA requirements for hosting both CHAN 2025 and AFCON 2027 matches.

Sports enthusiasts and local communities in Hoima have welcomed the development, viewing it as a long-overdue boost for the region’s sporting ambitions and economic vitality.
