The 15th International Federation of Air Traffic Safety Electronics Associations (IFATSEA) Africa Regional Meeting concluded in Kampala with a strong call for innovation, collaboration, and regional self-reliance in aviation safety and technology.

Speaking during the closing ceremony, Fred Bamwesigye, the Director General of the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) said the meeting has not only been rich in technical discussions and enlightening sessions but also a great platform for sharing innovations.

A key highlight of the meeting was the collective agreement on enhancing the competencies of Air Traffic Safety Electronics Personnel (ATSEPs) to support the future of aviation on the continent.

The conference focused on the role of digital transformation in Communication, Navigation, and Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) systems, as well as the emerging impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity.

Delegates agreed on the need to explore cost-effective technologies like drones (Unmanned Aircraft Systems – UAS) for flight calibration.

Traditionally conducted using expensive imported aircraft, the use of drones promises to revolutionize how African states manage air navigation infrastructure more affordably and efficiently.

Regional committees have now been set up to develop concrete frameworks for applying AI, securing aviation systems, and mainstreaming drone usage within African aviation operations.

Bwesigye reaffirmed UCAA’s commitment to innovation and continuous capacity development. “We are especially humbled by the commendations received for our efforts in system modernization and technical training. UCAA remains fully dedicated to supporting initiatives that empower ATSEPs and align with global best practices.”

“As we close this important chapter, let us continue to build on the momentum and partnerships established here. Together, we can shape a safer, smarter, and more self-sufficient aviation future for Africa,” Bamwesigye noted.
