The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) on Monday hosted a high-level sensitisation workshop for its Management Team as part of the ongoing International Internal Audit Awareness Month commemorations.
The workshop, held at UBOS headquarters, was graced by Mr Moses Kasakya, President of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Uganda, who paid a courtesy visit to the Bureau on May 19, 2025.
In his keynote remarks, Mr Kasakya emphasised the growing importance of internal audits in promoting good governance and institutional resilience. “Internal audits provide valuable insights, foresight, and assurance to strengthen governance, identify opportunities, and enhance efficiency,” he said.

Dr Chris Mukiza, Executive Director of UBOS, reaffirmed the Bureau’s commitment to audit excellence, stating that internal audit is a cornerstone of organisational integrity.
“Internal Audit is a critical function of the Bureau. It protects and sustains institutional value by offering independent, risk-based, and objective assurance and advice,” Dr Mukiza noted. “For internal auditing to fulfil its purpose, the active participation of the Board and Senior Management is vital. Their involvement fuels its impact.”
Dr. Mukiza also pledged continued collaboration with IIA Uganda, underlining UBOS’s commitment to raising the bar in audit standards. “UBOS pledges its continued support to the Institute of Internal Auditors through strengthened collaboration and shared commitment to advancing audit excellence.”

Mr Edbert Oyesiga, UBOS Director of Internal Audit, thanked the Executive Director for his ongoing support and outlined the Bureau’s activities for the awareness month. “The sensitisation workshop is just one of several initiatives we’ve organised to celebrate Internal Audit Awareness Month,” Oyesiga said.
“We also launched a daily internal staff quiz to promote awareness about internal audit, and I’m pleased to announce that Mr John Igumira, UBOS Public Relations Officer, emerged as the overall winner.”
The Bureau’s celebrations are part of the global campaign by the Institute of Internal Auditors to promote the role of internal auditing in driving transparency, risk management, and institutional efficiency.

As the month progresses, UBOS is set to host a Board Audit Committee workshop and the Internal Audit Conference, scheduled to take place in Munyonyo from May 21–23, 2025. These events will bring together internal audit professionals, governance experts, and development partners to explore emerging trends and best practices in internal audit.
