Former FDC President, Dr Kizza Besigye has described the Liberation Day that is marked every January 26 as “a bad memory” that does not deserve to be celebrated under the current government.
While many the country turned their attention to Arua district where this year’s Liberation Day celebrations were held, Besigye spent the day at his home in Kasangati having a light moment with young children.
He hosted a group of children from the different Divisions within Kampala, at an event that was also attended by city Mayor, Erias Lukwago and Kawempe South MP, Mubarak Munyagwa.
The day was characterized by funfare and merrymaking. At some point, Besigye entertained the children with his unusual dance strokes while they cheered on.
Asked to react on the significance of the historical day, Besigye told journalists; “We don’t want to associate with the 26th of January because it is a bad memory”.
“All those people who are lying [dead] in Luweero are lying their in vain, because why they died is still exactly what is going on,” Besigye added.
Thirty two years ago, a group of guerilla fighters led by incumbent President, Museveni captured Kampala and took government after waging war against the military leadership of Gen Tito Okello Lutwa.
In his speech while presiding over the celebrations in Arua on Friday, President Museveni said that the years of neglect, apathy, mismanagement, institutional inefficiency that had eroded the country’s image were now behind us.
However, Besigye says that the same reasons that took Museveni and the others (including Besigye) to the bus are the same things unfolding under Museveni’s leadership.
He reffered to the current state of government as “a few people terrorizing and controlling the country, and abusing its resources”.
