Uganda Airlines has officially announced the launch date for direct flights between Entebbe International Airport and London Gatwick, with operations set to begin on May 18, 2025.
The landmark development was unveiled by Hon. Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, Minister of Works and Transport, at an event held at Sheraton Hotel, Kampala, marking a major milestone in Uganda’s aviation industry.
Speaking at the event, Gen. Katumba Wamala highlighted the strategic importance of this new route in advancing Uganda’s economic interests and global connectivity.
“When His Excellency President Museveni championed the revival of Uganda Airlines in 2015, his vision was to create an air bridge that would reduce travel time and costs between Uganda and key business and tourism markets. This route is a fulfilment of that vision,” he said.
The Entebbe-London route will be Uganda Airlines’ third intercontinental destination after Dubai and Mumbai, strengthening the national carrier’s footprint on the global aviation map.

Reviving a Key Air Corridor
Uganda has not had direct flights to the UK since British Airways suspended services in November 2015, forcing passengers to endure long layovers and higher travel costs.
“This resulted in great inconvenience to travellers and reduced competition on the Entebbe-London route. As you know, where there is no competition, prices tend to soar. Uganda Airlines is stepping in to moderate the market, just as it has done on other routes,” Gen. Katumba explained.
The addition of London as the airline’s 17th destination marks steady progress in Uganda Airlines’ growth, positioning Uganda more competitively in the global economy.
Economic Growth and Trade
The new route is expected to enhance trade relations between Uganda and the United Kingdom by facilitating the faster movement of goods and services. This efficiency is particularly important for exporters of fresh agricultural products, reducing transit times and eliminating the risks associated with multiple layovers.
“In 2023, Uganda-UK trade accounted for GBP £556 million, with coffee, bananas, vegetables, minerals, and other agro-products topping the exports list. The direct flight will further strengthen these trade volumes,” the Minister stated.
The availability of a direct air cargo route will also benefit Uganda’s export sector, increasing competitiveness in the European market and contributing to economic growth and job creation.

A Boost for Uganda’s Tourism Industry
The United Kingdom remains a key source market for Uganda’s tourism industry, and direct flights are expected to drive increased visitor arrivals.
“Uganda is blessed with diverse tourist attractions, and this route provides a convenient travel option for UK tourists seeking to explore our national parks, wildlife, and cultural heritage,” Gen. Katumba noted.
With tourism being a major contributor to Uganda’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the direct flights are set to stimulate sector growth, generate employment opportunities, and promote Uganda as a top-tier travel destination. Additionally, the new route will make it easier for Ugandans living in the UK to visit home more frequently, strengthening family and cultural ties.
Strategic Impact and International Recognition
Gen. Katumba Wamala extended his appreciation to various stakeholders, including the UK High Commission, Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), and the Uganda Airlines Board and Management, for their efforts in securing the Foreign Carrier Permit for this route.
“This achievement has not come easy, but through persistence and strategic partnerships, we are seeing Uganda Airlines emerge as a strong competitor in the international aviation market,” he said.
