A tragic incident occurred in the Karenga Community Wildlife Area (KCWA), located outside Kidepo Valley National Park, resulting in the death of Mr. Frank Stuart Cox, an American sport hunter. According to the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), the incident happened during a scheduled sport hunting expedition.
The team, consisting of Cox, Trappe Mini Rudolf Francis (also an American citizen), a UWA ranger, and a UPDF officer, encountered a group of five buffaloes.
After one buffalo was shot, it retreated into a nearby thicket, only to charge at the group upon being located again. This resulted in Mr. Cox being fatally gored, while Francis sustained serious injuries. The buffalo was subsequently neutralized.
Emergency evacuation procedures were initiated, and the victims were transported to the Kidepo National Park airstrip for airlifting to Kampala. Unfortunately, Cox succumbed to his injuries, while Francis was successfully transported to Kampala for further medical attention.
The incident was reported to the police in Karenga, and investigations are ongoing. The deceased’s remains have been transferred to Mulago Hospital City Mortuary for post-mortem examination.
