Uganda’s long-distance runners delivered an impressive performance on the global stage after Yeko Elisha and Solomon Cherotwo clinched podium finishes in the men’s 10km race at the 2026 FISU World University Cross Country Championships in Cassino, Italy.
Elisha stormed to victory in the university championship race, clocking 30 minutes and 27 seconds to win the gold medal, while fellow Ugandan Cherotwo secured the bronze medal in 30:40, completing a strong showing for Team Uganda. Japan’s Hiromichi Nonaka finished second in 30:36.
The international championship, organised by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), brings together student-athletes from universities around the world to compete in elite cross-country races. The 2026 edition was held from 14–15 March in Cassino, Italy, attracting participants from more than 30 countries.
Both Elisha and Cherotwo are students at Bugema University, highlighting the growing contribution of Ugandan universities to the country’s athletics talent pipeline.
Elisha has previously demonstrated his potential in university competitions, winning the 10,000-metre race at the national inter-university level while pursuing his studies in information technology.
Their success in Italy adds to Uganda’s growing reputation as a powerhouse in long-distance running, with athletes from the country consistently excelling in cross-country, track and road races on the global stage.
