UPDF Soldier Burnt to Death in Kanungu

Police in Kanungu district is investigating circumstances under which a UPDF officer burnt to death.

The Regional Police spokesperson for Kigezi, Elly Matte said that the dead officer has been identified as Swalleh Waka Bakali (RA 204149) at the rank of Private.

Bakakali, 38, was attached to Mburameizi barracks in Kanungu district. His body was found burnt in his grass thatched hat at Kiruruma water treatment plant on the night of October 16.

Police say the cause of the fire is not known but that colleagues to the deceased said he was known to be an alcoholic, smoker and that he used a paraffin lamp for lighting.

The death was reported by Captain Ann Kayiira, 40, who is attached to the 307 Brigade, Mburameizi barracks.

Bakali’s body was then taken to the Second Division headquarters for postmortem.
