Uganda’s Junior Athletes Win 29 Medals at EAAR U18 & U20 Championships

Uganda’s rising athletics stars returned home in triumph Monday morning after a dominant performance at the Eastern Africa Athletics Regional (EAAR) U18 and U20 Championships held in Zanzibar.

The team arrived safely at Entebbe International Airport, proudly carrying 29 medals, including 9 golds, with the rest being silver and bronze.

The Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) warmly welcomed the young champions, hailing their achievements as a testament to the country’s growing strength in athletics, especially as Uganda celebrates Athletics at 100.

Among the standout performers was Cherop Risper, who stormed to victory in the women’s U20 5000m race, clocking an impressive time of 15:31.55 to win gold. Close behind was Charity Cherop, who claimed the silver medal with a strong finish in 15:33.43, marking a memorable one-two finish for Uganda.

In the U18 category, Chebet Isella and Chebet Keizia delivered another proud moment, winning gold and silver, respectively, in the 3000m race, solidifying Uganda’s dominance in long-distance events.

The team had been officially flagged off on April 23 ahead of the championships, which took place between April 25–26, 2025, in Zanzibar.

The Uganda Athletics Federation praised the athletes for their discipline, hard work, and determination, noting that their performance is a promising sign for the future of Ugandan athletics on the continental and global stage.

As the young champions returned home to celebrate their victories, they also carried with them the hopes and aspirations of a nation eager to build on this momentum toward even greater achievements.
