KAMPALA — Uganda has added two more silver medals to its tally at the ongoing Senior and U17 Wrestling Championships, with young wrestlers Aloto Marisha and Katongole Godfrey finishing runners-up in their respective weight categories.
According to the Uganda Olympic Committee, Aloto secured silver in the U17 53kg category, putting up a strong showing on the mat before finishing second.
Katongole also claimed silver in the U17 65kg category, giving Uganda another podium finish at the championships.
The Uganda Olympic Committee congratulated the two athletes for their performances, praising their determination and commitment to representing the country.
The latest medals add to Uganda’s growing presence in wrestling, a sport in which the country continues to develop athletes through youth and senior competition.
The U17 category is particularly significant because it provides a pathway for young wrestlers to gain international experience before moving into senior competition.
The results also come as international wrestling continues to place greater emphasis on developing athletes at junior level. The 2026 U17 World Championships, held earlier this month, featured competition across men’s and women’s freestyle as well as Greco-Roman wrestling, underlining the depth of the global junior wrestling programme.
For Uganda, however, the significance of Aloto and Katongole’s medals goes beyond the podium.
Silver is not gold. But in a sport that demands strength, technique, discipline and years of preparation, two young athletes reaching championship finals represents a foundation from which Uganda can build.
The Uganda Olympic Committee said the athletes had represented the country with “determination, strength and pride”, congratulating both wrestlers on their podium finishes.
The performances will also offer Uganda’s wrestling administrators an opportunity to assess the development of the country’s younger athletes as they prepare for higher-level regional, continental and international competitions.
