6th January 2025, Kampala – Uganda is set to host the prestigious Public Financial Management (PFM) Conference for Africa, which will take place from the 18th to the 20th of February 2025.

The announcement was made by CPA Ronald Mutumba, Vice President of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU), during an address to students, accountants, and members of the public at Skyz Hotel, Naguru.

“This is an honour for us as an institute,” CPA Mutumba said. “The PFM Conference will be a cornerstone event to deliberate on enhancing public financial management in Africa under the theme ‘Enhancing Public Finance in Africa: Progress and Prospects.’ Uganda’s selection as host is a recognition of the strides we have made in professional accountancy over the past 30 years.”

The conference will attract esteemed partners and organisations, including the African Development Bank, the African Union, the African Organisation of Public Accounts Committees, and the International Federation of Accountants.

“It’s an opportunity for us to showcase our capability as a leading professional accountancy body in Africa,” CPA Mutumba added. “We have positioned ourselves as a credible institution domestically, regionally, and internationally.”

During the same address, CPA Mutumba outlined several important updates for accountants and students.

Exam Results and Membership Applications

CPA Mutumba congratulated students who passed the December 2024 CPA exams, encouraging them to apply for membership in the institute.

“Passing the exam is only the beginning. Now, you must proceed to join the regulated team of professionals. For those who did not pass, don’t despair. Winners never quit.”

He further emphasised the importance of utilizing resources like ICPAU’s study providers, student engagement sessions, and practical experience training programmes.

Scholarship Programme

CPA Mutumba revealed that ICPAU’s Student Scholarship Programme, launched in 2019, continues to nurture talent in professional accountancy. Applications for the latest edition of the program closed on 15th January 2025, with announcements of successful candidates expected soon.

Market-Responsive Certifications

To meet market demands, ICPAU is offering specialised certifications in data analytics, business valuation, and financial planning. These courses are open to members and the public, with registration ongoing.

Final Masterclass for Foreign Qualifications

CPA Mutumba announced the final masterclass for accountants with foreign qualifications.

“This is aligned with the East African Community protocol, which encourages localizing the practice of accountancy. The July 2025 session will be the last for foreign accountants to integrate into the local framework.”

Licensed Accounting Firms

CPA Mutumba reminded the public to access services only from licensed accounting firms. “Practicing accountancy without a license from ICPAU is an offense. The institute will soon publish a list of licensed firms in the media and the Gazette.”

CPA Mutumba called upon stakeholders to support the PFM Conference and promote Uganda’s leadership in public financial management.

“This is a time for us to build relationships and enhance our roles as professionals in the development of our continent,” he concluded. “Let’s use 2025 to make a difference in our lives and the communities around us.”
